What I Liked About Vietnam Visa on Arrival

Ever since my teens, I have found peace and happiness in touring the world. It is breathtaking what destinations have to offer both locally and abroad. Vietnam is one of the recent destinations I scratch off the map of the world. Besides enjoying my time in this lovely country (I would recommend it to every travel enthusiast out there), there is something I picked up. I’m from Canada, and here is my opinion on why you need to try using the Vietnam visa on arrival (VOA).

What is visa on arrival?

Before we go into the specifics, let’s first define what is visa on arrival. As the name suggests, this process allows you to get a Vietnam stamped visa, upon your arrival at specific international airports in the country. You can apply for a visa on arrival online from a travel agency in Vietnam, and get your pre-qualification letter sent directly to your mail. You can then use this visa pre-approval letter to fly to Vietnam via any of the approved international airports in various parts of the country. There are some guidelines on eligibility and limitations, but you will find this offer quite convenient.

How I found out about Vietnam visa on arrival

On a typical travel preparation day, I like to outline my plan which entails everything from ensuring my travel documents are up to date. I usually choose my destinations early enough to help me save for the budget, so visa checks and airline fees are the last elements I verify. I had a friend in my house just before I left to get a Vietnam visa when she suggested that I should check visa on arrival options. It took a few searches here and there, but I finally understood what it is all about. I ended up traveling to Vietnam without stopping at the embassy.

What I loved about it. Why you should consider visa on arrival

The way visa on arrival works is pretty awesome and straightforward. It takes a few minutes to complete a brief online application form, and the pre-qualification letter is then available within 2 working days for standard processing. If it is an emergency, you can get your application processed within 4 – 8 hours, which is fantastic.

Once you have the pre-qualification letter, you can use it for departure and travel to Vietnam by air. The official stamped visa will be available to you upon arrival in any of the following international airports:

  1. Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi city
  2. Cat Bi International Airport in Hai Phong city
  3. Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City
  4. Lien Khuong International Airport in Da Lat city
  5. Cam Ranh International Airport in Nha Trang city
  6. Da Nang International Airport in in Da Nang city
  7. Phu Quoc International Airport in Phu Quoc island

This is very convenient, especially if you are only visiting Vietnam for a few weeks or months. It is a legit offer, so there is no concern about falling for a scam as long as you choose credible travel agencies to provide your VOA. The Immigration Department governs its issuance although you will get the visa from private travel agencies.

If you are planning to travel abroad, then you already know a visa is among your inevitable requirements. Most people who qualify for a regular visa can also be eligible for visa on arrival. This offer is available for foreign travelers entering Vietnam through an international airport. It is not permissible if you are using land or sea. Such cases require the conventional visa.  All you need once you get a pre-approval letter is two recent passport-sized photos of yourself and identification details. Your passport must also be at least six months away from the expiry date upon arrival in Vietnam.

How to apply for a visa on arrival

The application process for a Vietnam visa on arrival is very straightforward. The experience may vary from site to site, but most including the one I used, involve these steps:

Find an agency

  • Compare different private travel agencies that have the mandate to issue visas on arrival. Please take a look at website of Vietnam Visa Cheap

Application

Receive letter

  • The agency will send your visa on arrival pre-qualification documents to the email you provide during application. Find and print a hard copy to present on departure.

Charges and requirements

Bring two clear passport photos and a valid passport with at least six months remaining. You should also carry the $25 visa stamping fee for processing your visa on arrival at the airport. Please note that at the airport, you are required to pay additional US$25 if you apply for a single entry and US$50 for multiple entries. Present your documents at the airport and get visa stamped on your passport.

Bottom line

From my experiences, I did not find fault in using the Vietnam visa on arrival. However, you should note the eligibility requirements and limitations of this document. It won’t work for land and sea routes. Your visa also needs enough dates on it. Once you find a credible agency, the remaining pieces will fall in place. I think it is an affordable, convenient way to get hands of legit travel documents and you can even apply for multiple visits.
